The following courses cover practical and theory useful for sailors, powerboaters, volunteers, instructors and coaches.
Courses are scheduled over the year based on demand, let us know if you’d like to join a course not scheduled.

POWERBOAT HANDLING
Course Overview
The Powerboat Handling is a course designed to introduce you to practical driving skills, trip planning, boat maintenance and safety equipment and improve your boat handling skills, especially in confined areas such as marinas and in swell and waves.
The Powerboat Handling course will cover areas such as passage planning, sourcing weather information, powerboat terminology and rules, boat launching and docking as well as man overboard recovery.
Cost
$160 inc GST + $18.00 Australian Sailing registration fee
Course Duration
The course will be run over one full day.
Course Prerequisites
Water confident. The skills and knowledge gained in Start Powerboating or equivalent powerboating experience. The minimum age is 12 years. Must have a marine licence.
Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who wish to further develop their powerboat driving skills. This course is also a prerequisite for becoming a Dinghy and/or Windsurfing Instructor.
Course Outcome
You will gain your Powerboat Handling completion certificate.
SAFETY BOAT OPERATOR
Course Overview
Our Safety Boat Operator course is aimed at people with a desire to be in charge of a safety boat, particularly those who wish to assist their clubs or associations with the control and support of racing programs and other training courses. During this Course you will learn the skills needed to operate a Safety Boat and support other water based activities. You’ll learn about race course design, practise on-water rescue of dinghies and gain an awareness of techniques to support kite surfers and kayaks.

Who should do this course?
This Course is designed for those wishing to help out at a club as a safety boat driver. This course is also a pre-requisite for the Club Coach qualification
Course Outcome
You will gain your Safety Boat Operator completion certificate.
VHF MARINE RADIO LICENCE
Course Overview
A VHF Marine Radio Licence (Certificate of Proficiency) is a legal requirement for everyone who uses a marine VHF radio. Be confident, competent and legal in marine radio usage.
The course covers theory and practical hands-on instruction, followed by a theory and practical test. Course held at Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron.

Course Prerequisites
It is recommended that participants review the Marine VHF Radio Operators Handbook prior to beginning the course.
Who should do this course?
Ideal for casual boaters who only need to operate a marine radio in Australian waters (within 12 nautical miles of the coast).
Sailors participating in club racing tasked with using their boat’s marine radio.
Volunteers helping to deliver club racing, on radio duty in the tower or on start and patrol boats.
