OUTTHERE SAILING
Get out there!
OutThere Sailing is a fun, social and adventurous program for teenagers aged 12–17. It’s a chance to get outdoors, try new things and enjoy being on the water with other young people.
You don’t need previous sailing experience or BYS membership to join. Whether you’re completely new to sailing or already enjoy being on the water, OutThere is about having fun, building confidence and trying something different.

What is OutThere Sailing?
OutThere is a flexible program that combines sailing with a range of other on-water activities. At BYS, activities may include:
- Sailing
- Stand-up paddleboarding
- Windsurfing
- Powerboating
- Keelboating
- Beach games and other activities
The mix of activities can vary between courses depending on the interests of the group and the weather and conditions on the day.
Activities are delivered by experienced instructors in a safe, supportive and non-competitive environment.
How does OutThere Sailing work?
OutThere can be delivered across different levels, allowing participants to build their skills and confidence as they progress. The levels are less formal than a traditional sailing pathway, and participants can repeat a level or try different OutThere experiences.
OutThere 1 provides a fun introduction to sailing and a range of on-water activities.
OutThere 2 builds on those experiences, developing sailing skills and confidence through more activities and challenges on the water.
OutThere 3 provides opportunities to further develop sailing skills and take on new challenges.
The exact activities and format may vary between courses.
What to wear
OutThere activities can be wet and active, so participants should be comfortable getting wet and bring clothing and footwear suitable for being on the water. A wetsuit is ideal, particularly in cooler weather.
BYS provides all activity equipment, including boats and lifejackets.
Who can participate?
OutThere is for young people aged 12–17 who are water confident and want to try something new, have fun and enjoy being active with others.
You don’t need to be a BYS member to participate.
