Throw yourself into volunteering...

Be part of the action as a volunteer!

Family, friendship, sailing. It’s what we’re all about at BYS and we’re proud to say that you’ll hear these three little words time and again, no matter how you choose to enjoy the club.  Perhaps it’s also why lots of members are happy to give their time as volunteers both on and off the water. Like any member organisation we rely on our committed volunteers to take on the roles that make our sailing days so successful and so much fun.

Volunteering on race days

Maybe you’d like to be out on the water in a safety boat or be part of the action in the start box. If you’ve ever wondered how you can get ‘up close’ on race days, why not check out some of the options below. And don’t worry if you’ve never volunteered before or you feel you don’t have the required experience, we run a series of training courses that cover everything you need to know, and we’ll team you with an experienced member who can help show you the ropes.  It’s easy to get involved and be part of the team.

We’re always looking to welcome new volunteers so we’d love to hear from you. To become part of our team, just email us here or call 5925 9620 to speak with our sailing department who coordinate our team of volunteers.

Volunteering at the Club

Our members contribution and active engagement within Club life is what makes our Club a community within itself.  Being actively involved in Club life is rewarding, provides opportunities to meet others and provides a great sense of reward.

BYS provide many opportunities for our members to be actively involved within the Club including:

Committees

Sub committees

BYS publications

Trophy polishing

Member social events

Working bees

Annual Easter Art Show

To be involved in any of these opportunities please make contact with our Member Services and Engagement Officer, Kate Poole on 5925 9602, via email or call into the main office.  Kate will happily put you directly in contact with the right person.

When you qualify as a volunteer it’s important you come prepared for your duty so that racing runs smoothly.

Please sign on using the volunteer sign-on sheets, which will tell you your specific duty on the day (sometimes this may vary slightly from your allocated duty).

If you are volunteering on a patrol boat, please bring the following:

  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Reusable drink bottle

Please make sure you collect the following items from the sailing office:

  • Life jacket
  • Radio (on VHF Ch 71)
  • Safety gear (in labelled yellow and orange boxes)
  • Boat keys

If you are volunteering on the beach, please bring a reusable water bottle.

If you are unsure about anything to do with your role before your duty, don’t hesitate to email or call 5925 9620
