Volunteering

BLAIRGOWRIE YACHT SQUADRON

Come join our friendly crew

Throw yourself into volunteering...

Be part of the action as a volunteer!

Family, friendship, sailing. It’s what we’re all about at BYS and we’re proud to say that you’ll hear these three little words time and again, no matter how you choose to enjoy the club.  Perhaps it’s also why lots of members are happy to give their time as volunteers. Like any member organisation we rely on our committed volunteers to take on the roles that make our sailing days so successful and so much fun.

Maybe you’d like to be out on the water in a safety boat or be part of the action in the start box. If you’ve ever wondered how you can get ‘up close’ on race days, why not check out some of the options below. And don’t worry if you’ve never volunteered before or you feel you don’t have the required experience, we run a series of training courses that cover everything you need to know, and we’ll team you with an experienced member who can help show you the ropes.  It’s easy to get involved and be part of the team.

We’re always looking to welcome new volunteers so we’d love to hear from you. To become part of our team, just email us here or call 5925 9620 to speak with Bel in our Sailing Office.

Before each volunteer session:

When you qualify as a volunteer it’s important you come prepared for your duty so that racing runs smoothly.

Please arrive at the club 1.5 hours before racing is scheduled to start, for a briefing in the sailing office (top floor of the main building) with the Officer of the Day (OOD).

Please sign on using the volunteer sign-on sheets, which will tell you your specific duty on the day (sometimes this may vary slightly from your allocated duty).

If you are volunteering on a patrol boat, please bring the following:

  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Reusable drink bottle

Please make sure you collect the following items from the sailing office:

  • Life jacket
  • Radio (on VHF Ch 71)
  • Safety gear (in labelled yellow and orange boxes)
  • Boat keys

If you are volunteering on the beach, please bring a reusable water bottle.

If you are unsure about anything to do with your role before your duty, don’t hesitate to email Bel or call 5925 9620
