The Powerboat Handling is a course designed to introduce you to practical driving skills, trip planning, boat maintenance and safety equipment and improve your boat handling skills, especially in confined areas such as marinas and in swell and waves.
The Powerboat Handling course will cover areas such as passage planning, sourcing weather information, powerboat terminology and rules, boat launching and docking as well as man overboard recovery and boat handling techniques in swells and waves.
Following on from Powerboat Handling is our Safety Boat Operator course designed to provide the skills needed to support water-based activities at clubs and recreation centres.
Cost
This course will be delivered at no charge to our Volunteers, however, there is a $17.50 Australian Sailing registration fee.
Volunteers will be expected to help with the delivery of club racing, being rostered on duty during the season.
Course Overview
This one-day course is designed to improve your boat handling skills, especially in confined areas such as marinas and in swell and waves. You will learn more about engines and types of crafts and practise navigation techniques on a passage.
Course Prerequisites
Water confident. The skills and knowledge gained in Start Powerboating or equivalent powerboating experience. The minimum age is 12 years. Must have a marine licence.
Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who wish to further develop their powerboat driving skills. This course is also a prerequisite for becoming a Dinghy and/or Windsurfing Instructor.
Course Outcome
You will gain your Powerboat Handling completion certificate.

Tackers Sailing Pathway
The Tackers Sailing Pathway is a fun introductory, games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7-12 years. Kids don’t need to have any sailing experience or club membership to participate.
All equipment, including the boats and lifejackets, are provided. The Tackers Sailing Pathway program has 3 levels, each level involves 15-20 hours of participation over 3 to 5 days.
Tackers 1 is all about having fun! It’s a great way to introduce kids to sailing and the feeling of being on the water in a boat. Tackers is the perfect opportunity to meet new friends as kids sail in pairs in the boats, and also have the chance to sail with others in their group.
Every Tackers registration receives a ‘Tackers Showbag’ full of goodies!
Tackers 2 and 3 are next in the Tackers Sailing Pathway.

Course Overview
This course aims to provide children aged 7-12 with a fun, safe and affordable way to get into sailing.

Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who wish to have fun and learn the basics of sailing through games on and off the water.
Course Outcome
By the end of the Tackers 1 course, the participants will be able to:
- Steer with tiller extension under towing paddling power
- Tie a figure 8 knot, round twice and two half hitches
- Tack (push turn)
- Gybe (pull turn)
- Reach around a figure of 8 course using both tacking and gybing
- Sail with a tiller extension
- Sail upwind and downwind by following the safety boat
You will gain your Tackers 1 completion certificate.

Course Outcome
By the end of the Tackers 2 course, the participants will be able to:
- Get out of irons on their own
- Safely gybe the boat
- Correctly use the tiller extension
- Sailing around a triangle course, including:
- Upwind – on a close-hauled course tacking through the ‘no go zone’
- Downwind – with centreboard up
- Reaching – correct sail position
- Demonstrate a 360 and 720-degree turn

Tackers 3 is about sailing fast! This is a chance for the kids to sail a boat on their own, learning how to make the boat go faster and playing more games, all whilst under the guidance and supervision of our Australian Sailing qualified Instructor and Assistant Instructor.

- Demonstrate the correct method and understand the theory of roll tacking and gybing
- Stopping the boat in a confined area for a period of time
- Sail backwards
- Understand the theory behind gybing and can demonstrate the action downwind
- Show a sound knowledge of the five essentials:
- Centreboard position
- Boat trim
- Boat balance
- Course made good
- Sail trim
- Start and finish races on a triangle and trapezoid course
- Always use tactical mark roundings in races

BYS SheSails is a women’s sailing program offering a safe space for women to become comfortable and confident on the water while socialising and meeting new like-minded friends.
SheSails – Start Crewing 3-day course is the first on the sailing pathway, introducing you to the basics of sailing on a small keelboat, and includes boat handling, safety and sailing theory. You will learn basic sailing terminology and rules, basic knots, tacking and gybing as well as (wo)man overboard recovery.
Once you have completed SheSails Start Crewing, next on your sailing pathway is SheSails – Start Helming.
Make sure you check out the SheSails – Start Skippering too.
Women of all ages over 16 years are welcome! The aim of a Discover Sailing Experience is to encourage participants to want to do more sailing at the club and possibly register for a Discover Sailing Course.

BYS SheSails is a women’s sailing program offering a safe space for women to become comfortable and confident on the water while socialising and meeting new like-minded friends.
SheSails – Start Crewing 3-day course is the first on the sailing pathway, introducing you to the basics of sailing on a small keelboat, and includes boat handling, safety and sailing theory. You will learn basic sailing terminology and rules, basic knots, tacking and gybing as well as (wo)man overboard recovery.
Once you have completed SheSails Start Crewing, next on your sailing pathway is SheSails – Start Helming.

Women of all ages over 16 years are welcome! The SheSails Keelboat Racing Experience will provide you with a hands-on experience of sailing on one of our club boats with an instructor during the club’s twilight series.
Experience the social, fun and exhilaration of twilight club racing aboard a club keelboat with an experienced and qualified Instructor and fellow female crew members, while discovering how fun, safe, accessible and affordable sailing can be both on and off the water. After the racing, enjoy a social drink or meal on the deck during the presentations!
The SheSails Experience aims to deliver a great social and relaxing time while discovering how fun, safe, accessible and affordable sailing can be both on and off the water.
Once you have discovered your love for sailing, you can move through our other SheSails courses: SheSails – Start Crewing and SheSails – Start Skippering.

Experience Overview
A Discover Sailing Experience is an approximate three-hour sailing experience at an accredited Discover Sailing Centre, without the technical detail of a course, for families, friends, or work colleagues. Having the chance to use the Centre’s social facilities is as much a part of the experience as is getting out on the water. The aim of a Discover Sailing Experience is to encourage participants to want to do more sailing at the club and possibly register for a Discover Sailing Course.

The Tackers Sailing Pathway is a fun introductory, games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7-12 years. Kids don’t need to have any sailing experience or club membership to participate.
All equipment, including the boats and lifejackets, are provided. The Tackers Sailing Pathway program has 3 levels, each level involves 15-20 hours of participation over 3 to 5 days.
Tackers 1 is all about having fun! It’s a great way to introduce kids to sailing and the feeling of being on the water in a boat. Tackers is the perfect opportunity to meet new friends as kids sail in pairs in the boats, and also have the chance to sail with others in their group.
Every Tackers registration receives a ‘Tackers Showbag’ full of goodies!

- Sailing around a triangle course, including:

- Downwind – with centreboard up
- Reaching – correct sail position
- Demonstrate a 360 and 720-degree turn

Our OutThere Sailing Experience has been created for 12 – 17 year-olds who want to try a range of on-water activities; such as sailing, powerboating, stand-up paddleboarding and windsurfing without the long-term commitment. The program caters for all skill levels – absolute beginners are our speciality!
The OutThere Sailing Experience will provide you with hands-on experience of operating our club owned on-water equipment in a safe and friendly environment.
The OutThere Sailing Experience provides a social environment where teenagers can cultivate real friendships, whilst potentially igniting a love for sailing and other on-water activities.
Socialisation and fun both on and off the water are paramount; our BYS club culture is inclusive of everyone and there is plenty for parents and teenagers to get involved with.

Dinghies are small sailing boats and a great way to get into sailing. Sailing a dinghy can be fun and exhilarating and the Dinghy Program has been developed to provide a safe introduction to dinghy sailing.
In your SheSails Learn to Sail – Dinghy Course, you will learn the fundamental skills of sailing and are introduced to the fun of dinghy sailing in a safe and supportive environment while covering the basic equipment, sailing terminology, boat launching and recovery, and capsizing recovery in shallow & deep water, basic sailing rules and theory. You will also use the knowledge and skills gained to sail a triangular course!

This course aims to provide children aged 7-12 with a fun, safe and affordable way to get into sailing.

Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who wish to have fun and learn the basics of sailing through games on and off the water.
Course Outcome
By the end of the Tackers 1 course, the participants will be able to:
- Steer with tiller extension under towing paddling power
- Tie a figure 8 knot, round twice and two half hitches
- Tack (push turn)
- Gybe (pull turn)
- Reach around a figure of 8 course using both tacking and gybing
- Sail with a tiller extension
- Sail upwind and downwind by following the safety boat
You will gain your Tackers 1 completion certificate.

Tackers Sailing Pathway
The Tackers Sailing Pathway is a fun introductory, games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7-12 years. Kids don’t need to have any sailing experience or club membership to participate.
All equipment, including the boats and lifejackets, are provided. The Tackers Sailing Pathway program has 3 levels, each level involves 15-20 hours of participation over 3 to 5 days.
Tackers 2 is about learning tricks and techniques to help them to sail the boat, and if kids are feeling confident, they can sail a boat on their own, with lots of support, supervision and encouragement from our Australian Sailing qualified Instructors and Assistant Instructors.
Every Tackers participant receives a ‘Tackers Showbag’ full of goodies!
Once Tackers 2 has been completed, Tackers 3 is next up!

This course aims to build on the fun participants had in Tackers 1, to progress their sailing skills.

- Skills, knowledge and experience gained in Tackers 1.
Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who have completed Tackers 1.
Course Outcome
By the end of the Tackers 2 course, the participants will be able to:
- Get out of irons on their own
- Safely gybe the boat
- Correctly use the tiller extension
- Sailing around a triangle course, including:
- Upwind – on a close-hauled course tacking through the ‘no go zone’
- Downwind – with centreboard up
- Reaching – correct sail position
- Demonstrate a 360 and 720-degree turn
You will gain your Tackers 2 completion certificate.

Tackers 3 is about sailing fast! This is a chance for the kids to sail a boat on their own, learning how to make the boat go faster and playing more games, all whilst under the guidance and supervision of our Australian Sailing qualified Instructor and Assistant Instructor.

This course is designed for participants who have completed Tackers 2.
Course Outcome
By the end of the Tackers 3 course, the participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate the correct method and understand the theory of roll tacking and gybing
- Stopping the boat in a confined area for a period of time
- Sail backwards
- Understand the theory behind gybing and can demonstrate the action downwind
- Show a sound knowledge of the five essentials:
- Centreboard position
- Boat trim
- Boat balance
- Course made good
- Sail trim
- Start and finish races on a triangle and trapezoid course
- Always use tactical mark roundings in races
You will gain your Tackers 3 completion certificate.

Dinghies are small sailing boats and a great way to get into sailing. Sailing a dinghy can be fun and exhilarating and the Dinghy Program has been developed to provide a safe introduction to dinghy sailing.
In your Adult Learn to Sail – Dinghy Course, you will learn the fundamental skills of sailing and are introduced to the fun of dinghy sailing in a safe and supportive environment while covering the basic equipment, sailing terminology, boat launching and recovery, and capsizing recovery in shallow & deep water, basic sailing rules and theory. You will also use the knowledge and skills gained to sail a triangular course!

Keelboat Start Helming is the next step in your keelboat sailing pathway. The Start Helming course continues to develop both your theory and practical skills to allow you to confidently take control of the helm. You will further advance your sailing skills and safety knowledge to enable you to skipper unsupervised in sheltered waters. In the Keelboat Start Helming you will cover preparation of the boat, helm and trim on all points of sail, recovery of man overboard whilst at the helm, assessing the risks on board, actions to take in an emergency, sailing backwards, mooring, interpreting weather and environmental conditions and boat maintenance.
Once you have completed Keelboat Start Helming, the next course on the keelboat sailing pathway is Keelboat – Start Racing!

OutThere Sailing Experience – Week 2 (3 Days)
Our OutThere Sailing Experience has been created for 12 – 17 year-olds who want to try a range of on-water activities; such as sailing, powerboating, stand-up paddleboarding and windsurfing without the long-term commitment. The program caters for all skill levels – absolute beginners are our speciality!
The OutThere Sailing Experience will provide you with hands-on experience of operating our club owned on-water equipment in a safe and friendly environment.
The OutThere Sailing Experience provides a social environment where teenagers can cultivate real friendships, whilst potentially igniting a love for sailing and other on-water activities.
Socialisation and fun both on and off the water are paramount; our BYS club culture is inclusive of everyone and there is plenty for parents and teenagers to get involved with.

OutThere Sailing Experience sessions are all about having fun and getting a taste for on-water activities. This action-packed program will give you the opportunity to try one or all the following, sailing, windsurfing, stand up paddleboarding, powerboating and keelboating. Depending on your club, experience sessions will be held over 2-4 hours.
