YOUTH J/70 SQUAD

BLAIRGOWRIE YACHT SQUADRON

YOUTH j/70 SQUAD 16 - 30 YEARS

The skills to last a lifetime.

We’re passionate about engaging our young members and ensuring that sailors who have gone through our junior and youth sailing pathways have further opportunities to learn to skills and participate in racing.

The BYS Youth J/70 Sailing Squad was developed by Intermediate members in 2019 to provide young members with opportunities to train and race in the Club’s J/70s. For members aged 16 – 30, the squad provides a pathway for current sailors to develop a broad range of skills, including how to sail with a team and use an asymmetric spinnaker. Sailors also have the opportunity to represent BYS at regattas, with teams selected for state championships and the Sailing Champions League. We also have teams compete in the BYS Interclub Youth Regatta and the BYS Women’s Sportsboat Regatta.

Sailors aged 16 or 17 are encouraged to contact the Sailing Office before signing up for more information.

If you would like to chat about joining the Youth J/70 Sailing, simply call the Sailing Office on 03 5925 9620. Registrations are now open.

YOUTH J/70 SAILING

The Youth J/70 Squad Program

All members aged 16 – 30 are invited to join our Youth J/70 Squad Sailing Program, learning to be part of a team sailing our thrilling J/70s. Our Youth members also have a range of social events including the Young Members Night on Friday 19 January.  If you are new to J/70 sailing, give our Sailing Office a call. We can talk you through the options and put you in touch with our young members for a chat. Sailors aged 16 or 17 and their parents should speak with the Sailing Office before signing up.

When are the race days?

Race days for J/70 Class racing are listed on the Sailing Program. Racing is on Sunday afternoons, roughly fortnightly across the season. Training and social sailing dates to be confirmed.

What are the options to join?

We’ve set up three options of participation so you can choose the level of commitment that suits you best. In addition to sailing the J/70s all Youth J/70 Sailors will also participate in delivering the racing as a volunteer, learning more about racing and it’s requirements.

Youth J/70 Squad Sailor: Squad Sailors have access to sailing the Club’s J/70’s during Sunday class racing. Participate on the days that suit your schedule, subject to availability. Squad sailors also have the opportunity to join a crew to compete in one or more regattas including the BYS Interclub Youth Regatta, the BYS Women’s Sportsboat Regatta and the Petersville Regatta. Squad sailors also play a vital role mentoring the next generation of Youth J/70 Sailors, leading the Youth Social Sailing program. The fee to join the squad is $150.

Youth Squad training and regatta add on: Those a little more serious, can also selection the training and regatta add-on, giving sailors access to scheduled training days with a coach and the opportunity to be selected to represent BYS at the J/70 Victorian Championship and the Sailing Champions League regattas.

Youth J/70 Social Sailing: Members aged 16 – 30 are invited to join the J/70 Social Sailing program. Sign up and come along to meet other members of a similar age while learning how to rig and sail one of the Club’s J/70s. Join all five social sailing days, the perfect opportunity to come and try out J/70 sailing, without the pressure of racing.

What equipment is needed?

Sailors make use of the three club owned J/70s. You’ll need your own lifejacket and sailing gear. We recommend a good jacket to wear under your lifejacket (type 2), hat and sun protection and shoes with non marking soles.
