Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron is a lot of things to different people. A great place to meet and socialise with family and friends. A world class Marina from which to explore the attractions of the Bay. A competitive Club that takes pride in training sailors and managing racing in all its forms.

BYS is an Australian Sailing accredited Discover Sailing Centre that offers courses and opportunities for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced sailors. Our diverse group of experienced sailors love to welcome new members who want to have a go and are committed to passing on the skills and sportsmanship needed to sail.

LEARN TO SAIL KEELBOATS
Dinghy or Keelboat?
We run learn to sail programs using both small, off-the-beach dinghies and larger keelboats. Chose to learn to sail on the type of boat that suits you best!
Keelboat – big boat sailing
Keelboat courses use our J/70 Sportsboats, a 7m long keelboat, which allow participants to learn to sail on stable yet responsive vessels. The crew is comprised of several sailors so all participants can experience and master all roles on board. Teamwork is essential and allows for participants of all fitness levels to learn to sail. These vessels are called sportsboats for a reason through, more experienced crews will soon find out that these vessels are fast and lively!

Course Overview
Discover why people from around the world fall in love with sailing during a discover sailing experience on a keelboat. It’s the perfect introduction and can be the ideal way for you to begin your sailing journey.

Following the course, you will receive a completion certificate.
Course Overview
The start crewing course introduces participants to the basics of sailing on keelboats, including boat handling, safety and sailing theory. Ideal for those who wish to begin sailing in a keelboat, whilst staying relatively dry! All the equipment and gear will be provided and you’ll learn from a qualified Sailing Instructor.
Course Prerequisites
Water confident, over 16 years of age
Course Outcome
You will gain your Start Crewing completion certificate.

$415, inclusive of $20 Australian Sailing fee

Course Overview
The start helming course develops both your theory and practical skills to take control on the helm. The course is designed for participants who want to learn how to helm (steer) a keelboat, and continue their skill development as crew.
Course Prerequisites
Water confidence and the skills, knowledge and experience you gained from Start Crewing. Over 16 years of age.
Course Outcome
You will gain your Start Helming completion certificate.

Course Overview
For BYS members, you will now learn the basic racing rules of sailing, skills and tactics and gain an understanding of what is expected of a racing crew on a small boat. This course is designed for participants who wish to begin racing in a keelboat and join in with some twilight racing at the Club.
Course Prerequisites
Water confidence, the skills, knowledge, and experience you gained from Start Helming and Crewing courses, and a BYS membership. Over 16 years of age.
Course Outcome
You will gain your Start Racing completion certificate.

Tips for registering
When registering, make sure you enter the participant’s details (if you are registering for a partner).
If you have sailed before, you will have an Australian Sailing number which you’ll need during registration. You can seach for Australian Sailing numbers online.
If you have NOT sailed before, instead of entering an Australian Sailing number and submit, please click ‘Sign Up’ and then New Member, entering your details. You will then receive an Australian Sailing number via email.
We adhere to specific participant to instructor ratios for a safe and quality program. Our courses often book out quickly so we recommend securing your preferred course as early as possible. If the course you were after is fully booked, add your details to the “waiting list” and we will contact you if a spot becomes available.
Child Safeguarding
We are committed to sport environments that are safe, supportive and friendly for children and young people. We have zero tolerance for any behaviours that put the well-being of children and young people at risk. All employees that will work with Children undergo an extensive screening process prior to appointment.
