It was great to see Sail Sandy return to the Victorian regatta calendar after a 2-year absence.
BYS had 4 youth sailors representing the club at the regatta, Hamish Cowell and Lucas James in the Laser Radials (now officially re named the ILCA 6 Dinghy) with Charley McCarthy and Angus McIntyre joining the Laser 4.7 (ILCA 4) fleet.
Great conditions on Day 1 saw 4 races completed, with team BYS putting on a fine showing. Hamish & Angus both won their opening heats with Lucas and Charley also pushing hard at the front of the fleet. Charley secured three podium places from the 4 heats to lead the ladies championship overnight. Sunday saw a long postponement & finally the fleets leave shore in marginal conditions with another 2 heats sailed in 5-6 knots of shifty breeze. Hamish secured 3rd
overall in the ILCA 6 with 2 podium finishes while Angus came away with a series win after getting clear in the final ILCA 4 heat. Charley had another great day, just missing 3rd overall (on countback) with Lucas James managing to overcome the injury that forced him out of the final Saturday heat and showing great tenacity to secure a top 6 heat finish, putting his older peers on notice that he will be one to watch next event when back to full fitness.
