SYC Commodore’s Challenge for Women in Sailing

BYS was invited to put a female team together to sail in the Commodore’s Cup at Sandringham in their training boats, Beneteau 7.5s. So on Saturday, our team consisting of myself as skipper, Dawn Havis main sheet, Debbie Goodin, Nellie Kudnig and Sally Derham on foredeck had a practice sail on the Saturday morning in sunny conditions. It was thought an extra pair of hands would be good and Daisy Lang offered to sail with us on the Sunday.

We arrived bright & early on the Sunday for the boat draw at 8am. BYS Number 1. The conditions were not so pleasant 20knot winds and pelting rain. A comment from another Club team member, ”How about a bake off instead of doing this?”. However the RO sent us out with reefed mains for the first race. Wind abated so reefs out and slowly the rain eased. Sailing conditions continued to improve as did our sailing, but we couldn’t beat the young guns from Royal Brighton and Sandringham and Monica Jones’ team from Royals.  The crew from Safety Beach and ourselves, a close 4th with equal scores.

It was a privilege to represent BYS but let’s hope Women’s sailing events can be scheduled when the weather is a bit kinder.

Go girls!
