Contender Season Wrap-Up: Wind, Wins and World Champs!

Season Wrap-Up: Wind, Wins and World Champs

This season, the wind proved to be our fiercest rival—either too much or nowhere to be found. But, true to form, the Contender fleet still delivered some thrilling, close-quarters racing for those who made it to the start line (which, much like the wind, was anything but predictable).

Big shoutout to Mike and Rob for their consistent attendance and ever-improving results—turns out sailing regularly does help in the aggregate! Pat had a standout performance, snagging an impressive 3rd in a well-contested race. Meanwhile, Ned and Dean made some dazzling cameos, and it’s always a joy to see Adrian slicing across the water with a big grin on his face. Steve is making his way back to the fleet after a solid run at “Sailing Dad of the Year” for the past five seasons.

Jonno Harding continues to show he’s a threat at the pointy end—when the conditions are just right and if he’s not worn out from golf or lounging in the caravan… so, not that often. And after teasing us all season by leaving his boat in the way of lawn mowing, we’re hopeful that next season sees Ken finally ditch the big toy for some one-design action.

At McCrae, the Vic State Titles served up their usual recipe of chaotic conditions and high-level competition. An impressive 45-boat fleet hit the water, including five world champions. BYS sailors Callum and Tim held their own in the mix, with some room for growth, while Paul (aka “Cut-Snake”) showed flashes of brilliance—when he wasn’t busy crashing on port or capsizing in what most would call mild breeze. And of course, Mr. Lindholm and his unmistakable orange rocket were always quick off the line and right in the thick of it during those tight starts.

We’re beyond excited to see six Contenders heading to Lake Garda, Italy, to fly the BYS flag at the World Titles—more than we sometimes get at club level! Best of luck to Callum, Tim, Jonny, Ned, Steve, and Paul. A special shoutout to Tim, who’s hanging up the trapeze after 10 years in the class. His sharp skills, steady presence, and frustratingly accurate knowledge of the rulebook will be sorely missed.

But don’t worry—fresh blood is incoming! Chris Bick, after spending the year zigzagging solo in a Musto, has finally seen the light and joined the Contender family.

And as for who will win the honor of shouting the most expensive post-race drink next season? That race is wide open.
