BYS sailors take on winter sailing at the SSCBC Midwinters

Over the long weekend a group of BYS sailors made the long trek to Sorrento for their Midwinters regatta. In the ILCA6’s, Gus McIntyre and Lucas James took the final opportunity to sharpen their skills before heading to Poland for the Youth World’s in a couple of weeks.

Will James, Fred O’Brien and Abby Young took up the challenge in their new(ish) ILCA4’s and Alister Danks and our Head of Sailing, Michelle de Blaquiere took their place in a small, but high quality, Sabre fleet. Garrath ‘Gaz’ James also made a cameo appearance on Sunday to fill in for Lucas who had to study for exams.

The keen bunch were greeted with a steady breeze from the North on the Saturday, WillyWeather was telling us it was 20 plus knots which caused a slight nervous look to the faces of Will and Fred. In reality it was a bit calmer in the Sorrento bay, around 15 kts, so they saddled up and hit the water. 4 races were completed, and all the sailors came ashore happy to be warmed up by some pumpkin soup.

Sunday was more subdued with a gentle 10 to 12 knot breeze, with some great race management all fleets again completed 4 races in quick time.

Gus finished a very close 2nd overall in the ILCA6, Will a very consistent 2nd in the ILCA4 and Alister 3rd in his Sabre.
