YOUTH J/70 SQUAD

The Youth J/70 Squad Program

All members aged 16 – 30 are invited to join our Youth J/70 Squad Sailing Program, learning to be part of a team sailing our thrilling J/70s. Our Youth members also have a range of social events including the Young Members Night on Saturday 11 January.  If you are new to J/70 sailing, give our Sailing Office a call. We can talk you through the options and put you in touch with our young members for a chat. Sailors aged 16 or 17 and their parents should speak with the Sailing Office before signing up.

When are the race days?

Race days for J/70 Class racing are listed on the Sailing Program. Racing is on Sunday afternoons, roughly fortnightly across the season. The Squad gets priority access to the J/70s for Sunday Racing and can also book the boats for Friday and Saturday racing (where they’re available). 

J/70 Class racing is scheduled for:

• 12 & 26 October
• 16 November (boats allocated to states regatta teams)
• 7 & 21 December 
• 4 January (boats allocated to national regatta teams)
• 25 January 
• 8 February
• 1, 15 & 29 March
• 12 April

As there is always a lot happening, BYs members can join the Youth Squad at any point during the season.

The BYS J/70 Youth Squad also competes in regattas throughout the season, including the Women’s Sportsboat Regatta in March and the Youth Sportsboat Regatta in April. When interest in competing in regattas exceeds availability, selection criteria will be set with teams chosen by a selection panel. Squad members can also apply to travel with the J/70s to other regattas (subject to conditions and approval). 

Join the squad as:

• Youth J/70 Club Squad Sailor: Participate in Sunday J/70 racing according to your schedule, keelboat club races on Fridays and Saturdays, and BYS regattas, the Women’s Sportsboat Regatta and the Youth Sportsboat Regatta. The fee to join the squad is $150.
• Youth J/70 Regatta Squad Sailor: Gain the opportunity for regatta team selection at representative events such as the J/70 Victorian Championship, J/70 National Championship, Sailing Champions League and Australian 2K Team Racing Championship. The regatta squad fee is an additional $100 on top of the Club Squad fee.

What equipment is needed?

Sailors make use of the three club-owned J/70s. You’ll need your own lifejacket and sailing gear. We recommend a good jacket to wear under your lifejacket (type 2), hat and sun protection and shoes with non marking soles.
