Sailing wrap – 24 November 2021

For once we managed to get away with a full program of sailing over the weekend, with OTB out on the water sailing heat 4 of the OTB aggregate. The afternoon race saw a large fleet of Sabres take part, with Sam Backwell showing some of the older and more experienced sailors how it’s done pulling out a 2-minute win over Matt McCarthy in Rebel Yell and Mark Hughes in Lime and Tonic. The rest of the fleet finished very close together, with only less than a minute separating most of the field. In the Minnows. Will Hailes and Alby Moorhouse fought it out all the way to the line with Will just edging out Alby on the line.

The keelboats had two races on. The early race was the Mornington Peninsula Funerals series (part of the Spry races), followed in the afternoon by the Fitzpatrick & Co Heat 2. In the performance handicap division, Georgina Plumridge sailing Seaflite took the honours, while Ken Mackenzie in his new J99 Nanook sailed an impressive race to take second. Bo Derek continued to be impressive in the ORCC division taking the win from Ten Past Two, another Adams 10.

Paul Bolton will be facing a handicap hit after an impressive start in the Fitzpatrick & Co series, finishing nearly 3 minutes clear of Cameron sailing Phantom, with Trevor Harding on Eva missing second place by just 14 seconds.

In the J70s, four boats made the start line for two 45-minute back-to-back races: heats 1 and 2 of the P. Kudnig Memorial Trophy. The competitors were greeted by 12 to 15 knots from the south with flat water – perfect sportsboat racing conditions! Spike sailed an impressive first race and was first to cross the line, with Jumpin’ Jack Flash winning race 2.

Thanks to all our volunteers on duty over the weekend.
