It seems we can all do with better understanding the rules of our sport but the thought of sitting down to read the ‘blue book’ with a cup of tea doesn’t really sound appealing. However, having a good working knowledge of the rules means you’ll be ‘playing fair’, will feel more confident (and safer) while racing, and you might even use the rules to your advantage.
This season we’ll be running a series of three rules sessions:
- Starts and Mark Roundings, 21 October,
- Strategic Use of the Rules, 2 December, and
- Penalties and Protests, 3 February 2024.
A bumper crowd of 45+ turned out to the first of the series of three rules sessions, Starts and Mark Roundings, on Saturday morning, with rules and examples expertly explained by Tim Dorning with the assistance of Chris Wilson.
There were lots of questions and conversation with sailors of varying racing backgrounds seeking to further their knowledge of the Racing Rules of Sailing. Tim has kindly made his slides from the session available for those who weren’t able to attend.

Thank you to Tim and Chris who generously shared their time and expert knowledge making these sessions possible.
