Celebrating Our 73rd Sailing Season
Last Saturday, members and guests gathered in the Southern Waters Room to mark the start of our 2024 – 25 sailing season. Vice Commodore Ian Delmenico welcomed everyone, followed by Commodore Martin Kudnig sharing an overview of the season ahead. Rear Commodore Georgina Plumridge proudly introduced our newly appointed Junior Club Captains, Will Hailes and Sam Kudnig, who are both enthusiastic about their new roles and eager to work with the sailing team this summer.
Zoe McKenzie MP officially opened our 73rd Sailing Season, highlighting the importance of our club’s strong community and the support and friendships it nurtures.
Club Person of the Year Kirsten Binns-Smith and long-standing member Bruce Harding braved the weather to raise the first burgee of the season. Father Bruce Grey blessed the fleet, fondly recalling his own sailing experiences growing up.
A special mention was given to Laura Harding for her sailing achievements and her current involvement with Andoo Team Australia in the PUIG Women’s America’s Cup in Barcelona.
We also honored Ron and Joan Batty, along with Roger Cooke, for their 50 years of membership. Ron and Joan shared their family’s three-generation connection to BYS and the lifelong friendships they’ve made.
Although the weather didn’t cooperate, spirits were high as the traditional three cheers rang out indoors for the Commodore in place of the traditional on water Sail Past. Sailors then hit the water to compete in the KB Bill Peters Trophy and the OTB Spring Series.
While the official sail past couldn’t happen on the water, members and guests enjoyed lunch, drinks, and great company in the Southern Waters Room, watching the races from ashore.
Best wishes to all for the sailing season ahead!
