Sailing wrap – 13 January

What a busy weekend of sailing! Friday night’s sailing was cancelled due to a large band of rain and thunder activity moving over the state and the peninsula throughout the day. With the weather improving overnight, the long-distance keelboat race starting at 0800 on Saturday morning looked far more promising. Ten yachts hit the start line and headed east for the first leg of the 48 nautical mile race. The early leader was Robert Case in Serifa 2 which somehow edged out a 25-minute lead halfway through the race, but was unable to hold off Ken MacKenzie’s new J99, Nanook, which sailed a great second half to take line honours from Bo Derek and Jenni and Georgina’s new addition, Dirt Water, a Beneteau First 40, which was third across the line. Handicap results for the Spry race are online. In the OTB fleet, the final two heats of the Perpetual Shield Series had the largest fleet of yachts to hit the water this season, with 22 Sabres, 8 Contenders, 6 Minnows and a sprinkling of Lasers and Aeros. The wind was up and conditions tested everyone. Full results are online as usual.

This week we had the Two-Handed race on Wednesday. On Friday we have the Wooden Boat Shop twilight series and on Saturday the Coast & Country Getaways Lady Skippers race combined with our Coast & Country Pink Day, raising funds for the Breast Cancer Network Australia. All three of our J70s have been booked and will be crewed with full all-female teams. Come dressed in pink for a fun day. In OTB racing we have the Class Trophy race heats 1 and 2, and to finish off on Sunday we have the J70 final heats of the Kudnig Memorial series. Yet another massive week of sailing coming up for the club.

A reminder that you must register your yacht prior to any racing. Last week we had several people try to sign in at the last minute. The Start Box team cannot register you on the day, so don’t leave it till race day as you may (WILL) not get a result.

22 Sabres on the start line last Saturday.
