Interclub Youth Regatta

Last Saturday, BYS hosted the Interclub Youth Regatta. This was a one day regatta filled with short course racing on the J70s.

BYS had three boats who were racing against a team from Sorrento and a team from Sandringham. The light breeze allowed everyone to get in four races in the morning, but unfortunately as the afternoon drew on, the wind started to fade and we couldn’t get anymore racing in.

The inaugural Kurt Jaks Sportsmanship award was presented to Harrison Sly for his ‘never say die attitude’ in completing race three after being caught on a mark rope. We sincerely thank our Past Commodore, Kurt Jaks, in his generous support of this award.

Congratulations to Ethan O’Brien, James Hackett, Mitch Harding and Harriette Singh who took out the win, with three firsts throughout the regatta. Thank you to BYS for hosting the regatta and to all our wonderful volunteers who helped the day run smoothly!

An enormous thank you to all our volunteers and sponsors for making The Interclub Youth Regatta possible. We were very pleased to welcome a team from Sandringham YC and Sorrento SSCBC. Next year we would really like to grow the Interclub side of this Regatta and get teams from more Clubs.

Through better marketing and reaching out further to all clubs around the bay, we are excited to grow this regatta. Special thanks to Felicia Brown for all her hard work and David Brown for the generous loan of his personal RIB and acting as driver. Once again Andrew Little did an amazing job as RO and his enthusiasm to push for four races early in the day ultimately was critical in getting us a regatta series. Well done Andrew. To Tony Landgren and Georgina Plumridge for loaning their personal J70s to the youth, an enormous thank you for your continued selfless contribution to youth sailing at BYS. Again, many thanks to Brad McKenzie in his capacity as unofficial official photographer!

To the mark laying teams, on water safety teams, box teams and radio volunteers, thank you all. Finally well done to Ethan O’Brien and his team from BYS for taking the Regatta win.
