Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron is a lot of things to different people. A great place to meet and socialise with family and friends. A world class Marina from which to explore the attractions of the Bay. A competitive Club that takes pride in training sailors and managing racing in all its forms.

 

If you’ve ever harboured a wish to get out on the water, we can help make it a reality. It’s never too late to start sailing!

 

BYS is an Australian Sailing accredited Discover Sailing Centre that offers courses and opportunities for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced sailors. Our diverse group of experienced sailors love to welcome new members who want to have a go and are committed to passing on the skills and sportsmanship needed to sail.

 

Any of the courses outlined below can be taken in any order you choose. But before you jump in, why not come along to our Discover Sailing Introduction Open Day.

 

Discover Sailing Introduction

Come to our Open Day and try sailing for the first time.

There’s no better way to get a feel for the thrill of sailing than to come along to our annual Open Day event at BYS. No sailing experience is required. A 2 hour primer of everything you need to know, you’re welcome to join us and afterwards stick around and enjoy the great social environment of the club. BYS provides all equipment and qualified Australian Sailing Instructors will be sailing with you. Come dressed for the weather, in comfortable clothing and closed toe shoes.

WHAT TYPE OF BOAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAIL ?

Two of the best boat classes to start out on are (Dinghy) Off the Beach and Keelboat. Our courses will build on the knowledge you’ve picked up in the Introductory course to build you a solid base of knowledge and experience that will grow with you as you sail. And you can start with either Dinghy or keelboat lessons, the choice is yours.

New Members Training

Here’s something very new and very exciting that’s kicking off for all New, Full Adult Members who join in the 2021/22 Season.

Teh training is designed to get you sailing faster.

We know that the key to getting out on the water (perhaps for the first time) is feeling like you know what you’re doing. So when you join BYS, we’ll train you, and it won’t cost a cent to learn from experienced sailors who’ll pass on their knowledge to you.

It’s free, it’s fun and it’s open to you.

Here’s how it works

  • Become a full Adult Member, click the link  here when you’re ready.
  • Browse the courses that we offer by the links below. It’s a  terrific way to try sailing and powerboating and to develop skills you can use when volunteering.
  • Choose the courses (up to 3) that you, your partner or your family would like to train in. That’s right, the courses can be shared between couples or families between the adults in their membership unit.
  • When you’ve decided, it’s as simple as calling us on the number below and we’ll get the ball rolling for you.           

We haven’t forgotten Full Adult Members who joined during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, you’re also eligible to take up one free training course in the 2021-22 season.

DINGHY

Dinghies are small sailing boats and a great way to get into sailing. Two start sailing levels and have been developed to provide a safe introduction to dinghy sailing that can be fun and exhilarating.

 

This course is designed to provide an introduction to the basics of sailing on a two-handed dinghy, including boat handling, safety, and sailing theory. Ideal for water confident adults wanting to learn the basic fundamentals of sailing. Boats and lifejackets are provided. 

Dinghies are small sailing boats and a great way to get into sailing. Sailing a dinghy can be fun and exhilarating and the Dinghy Program has been developed to provide a safe introduction to dinghy sailing.

 

In your Adult Learn to Sail – Dinghy Course, you will learn the fundamental skills of sailing and are introduced to the fun of dinghy sailing in a safe and supportive environment while covering the basic equipment, sailing terminology, boat launching and recovery, and capsizing recovery in shallow & deep water, basic sailing rules and theory. You will also use the knowledge and skills gained to sail a triangular course!

 

Cost

$350 inc GST + $17.50 Australian Sailing registration fee

Your sailing journey can start or progress here as you learn the fundamental skills of dinghy sailing and enhance your confidence and fun on the water.

 

Course Prerequisites

 

Water confident.

 

Who should do this course?

 

This course is designed for participants who wish to begin sailing in a dinghy. All the equipment and gear will be provided by your accredited Discover Sailing Centre.

 

Course Outcome

 

You will gain your Start Sailing 1 completion certificate.

Your sailing journey continues as you begin to master your fundamental sailing skills. You will become equipped to sail your dinghy on your own. 

 

Course Prerequisites

 

Water confidence, and the skills and knowledge gained in Start Sailing 1.

 

Who should do this course?

 

This course is designed for participants who have completed Start Sailing 1 and are wanting to learn and continue to develop their fundamental sailing skills.

 

Course Outcome

 

You will gain your Start Sailing 2 completion certificate. 

KEELBOAT

Keelboat Start Crewing is the first step on the keelboat sailing pathway that introduces you to the basics of sailing on a small keelboat. The Keelboat Start Crewing course includes boat handling, safety and sailing theory, by covering basic sailing terminology and rules, basic knots, tacking and gybing and man overboard recovery.

 

All this for the small investment of $350.

 

Once you have completed Keelboat Start Crewing, the next course on the Keelboat Sailing Pathway is Keelboat – Start Helming!

 

Please bring with you:

  • Jacket to keep you warm
  • Refillable drink/water bottle
  • Hat and sunscreen

 

Lifejackets and sailing equipment are provided.

Course Overview


The first step on the Keelboat pathway introduces you to the basics of sailing on a small keelboat, including boat handling, safety and sailing theory.

 

Course Prerequisites

 

Water confident.

 

Who should do this course?

 

This course is designed for participants who wish to begin sailing in a keelboat. Learn the basics, whilst staying relatively dry! All the equipment and gear will be provided by your accredited Discover Sailing Centre.

 

Course Outcome

 

You will gain your Start Crewing completion certificate.

Keelboat Start Helming is the next step in your keelboat sailing pathway. The Start Helming course continues to develop both your theory and practical skills to allow you to confidently take control of the helm. You will further advance your sailing skills and safety knowledge to enable you to skipper unsupervised in sheltered waters. In the Keelboat Start Helming you will cover preparation of the boat, helm and trim on all points of sail, recovery of man overboard whilst at the helm, assessing the risks on board, actions to take in an emergency, sailing backwards, mooring, interpreting weather and environmental conditions and boat maintenance.

 

Once you have completed Keelboat Start Helming, the next course on the keelboat sailing pathway is Keelboat – Start Racing!

You will now advance your sailing skills and safety knowledge to enable you to skipper unsupervised in sheltered waters.

 

Course Prerequisites

 

Water confidence and the skills, knowledge and experience you’ve gained from completing the Start Crewing course.

 

Who should do this course?

 

This course is designed for participants who wish to begin skippering a keelboat, unsupervised.

 

Course Outcome

 

You will gain your Start Skippering completion certificate.
